Changing the Font & Style of Your H1 Tags

QUESTION: (Rhonda) I am having problems changing the font size of my H1text. Is this very important? If so, how do I go about changing it?

Changing the text and/or style of an H1 tag is simple in CSS.  It does not affect anything other than how the visitor sees it though (i.e., if you use a large font, it means nothing more than a smaller font, in SEO terms or how Google sees it).

You can change the H1 tag locally or in the CSS definition file.

If you want to change all of the H1 tag settings in your entire website, you would do this in the CSS file:

h1 {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would use the h1 tag as you normally would:
<h1>This is my H1 tag</h1>

You can define a class in the CSS file which allows you to define your new style whenever you wish anywhere on the site:

.h1style {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would add this class to your h1 tag, when you wish it:

<h1 class=”h1style”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

* Remember to add the “.” when defining it in the CSS to classify it as a class.

Finally, you can do it locally using a style attribute (without the CSS file):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px;”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

All of the above do the exact same thing.  Their use is based on how often you use the style and how you want it defined (whether globally or locally).

Also, remember you can add other styles to the same definition (like color):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px; color:red;”>This is my H1 Tag that is Red and 24px high</h1>

I find that being able to change the styles of my text for header and other standard tags to be quite invaluable!  Knowing a little bit of CSS can go a long way.  Give this a try!

The easiest thing to try first is the local definition using the style attribute. If this is working for you, consider creating or editing your own CSS file!

Good luck!  cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew Bredel begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlightingMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

I have been running this blog of mine, MatthewBredel.com for about 8 months now.  I switched over from Blogger.com for a few reasons:

1)  Their automated moderators would at times shut down my blog for no real good reason at all

2)  The templates were easy to edit, but they did lack a bit of flexibility

3)  Some days their server was down or running so slow it was unbearable to post

4)  I was looking for something more personal that I could own, manage and build a little bit of page rank as a stand-alone object.

Branding my name a little bit was a plan of mine and this seemed like a good place to start…a free Wordpress blog.  (Understand, though, that my blogger blog did work really well and it was free, so who am I to complain!…The $3.95/month for hosting at GoDaddy seemed like a reasonable price for my own blog, though).

Anyway, for the past few months I have been teaching people the importance of social networking and more particular, adding comments to blogs!  By participating in online communities, you can make yourself noticed, respected and possibly an authority figure! When you starting giving other blogs some love, people (over time) will usually return the favor.  Then your blog becomes the authority blog of the community.  That is our goal here.

So here I am teaching this stuff all over the place and scratching my head over the last few months…

“Gosh, my blog must really suck or no one knows that it is here because very few people leave comments.”

(Except, of course those people wanting to tell me that Viagra is the solution to all of my problems or details on where I can find pictures of Britney Spears naked!)

It has been frustrating and every time that I went to test the comments, it seemed to work fine with me.  How disappointing…

…Until I came to MatthewBredel.com last week and went to add a comment (more like an appendage) to a post that I made myself PRIOR to logging in:

blog1.gif

HUH???  OH UH!  Why in the heck does it want me to log in?  I thought that I covered all of this stuff within Wordpress!  I must have spent an hour when I first created this blog to try to anti-spam it as much as possible.  I added plug-ins and set all of my moderation settings to where I wanted them.  But all of this time I have been forcing people to register and log in to make a comment.

I spent all of this time in the Comments, Moderation, and Plug-Ins sections that I completely ignored the Options section:

blog2.gif

SHOOT!  Of course, I unchecked the boxes and sure enough people started to comment on my blog.  It feels great to know that people do want to comment on your blog because I was starting to feel a bit like a tool there for awhile.

I do really appreciate all the comments (except the spam ones) on my blog and I just feel like a complete bonehead that I let it slip for so long.

I am going to classify today’s blog under “Conversion.:  Remember, the definition of “conversion” is the success rate you have to satisfy a goal.  One goal on my blog is participation.  If I make the goal unachievable or extremely painful to achieve, then in the internet marketing profession we call it “Poor Conversion Tactics”…and I am guilty as charged.

(so embarrassing!…)

  1. Hi Mattt,
    You may feel like a bonehead but it’s a good feeling to admit a “goof” every once in a while. Just goes to show that you are human like the rest of us. Besides I would rathe admit I goofed then to never get a chance that I goofed and correct my mistake and profit from it.

    By the way are sure you unchecked those Options. I read your blog entry and when I tried to leave a comment I was as “told” I had to be registered to leave a comment. Which for me was that bad because it sort of forced me to register with Wordpress and learn more about them.

    Blogging via comments might even become fun, it looks like.

  2. TOO FUNNY, CHANGIS! When I went to create this blog, I went and changed them back to demonstrate the settings that I had and then I forgot to change them back…

    …Now I feel like a REAL IDIOT! Thanks for the heads up!…It is removed now! (And if it was not for you, I probably would have had 6 more months of no comments!!!)…cheers…matt

  3. I have been reading your blog info as I have had access to spaces and places on this site. I had send my email not as a comment but a question as to how I locate a user name and password signed up for and lost as I jumped from sign-up to sign-up. This site must not have accepted my usual name and password and still ask how I retrive this info???

    Social blogging most certainly for me is a way for $$$ to head to my bank account which currently is not even an open account. I was in a car accident a bit over three tears ago and from salesman, business owner, spouse, parent etc… I had to reteach myself how to read, write, peak, walk, pee etc.. No complaint there I once again can acheive these tasks and from homeless to housed I have been to set my children up with funds from a small accident settlement and purchase a great computer. there theb funds stopped. I collect a small soc sec check which covers 75% of my bills–the basics (food, rent, internet). 25% are shuffled so the same company is never stiffed two months in a row. I have developed some unique, honest and true money making ideas for websites, five include blogs as integral parts of their content. Where does the poorest of poor go for funding these social networking ideas?

  4. One more comment. I pressed submit comment and here I am on the blog! Please still help me with locating user name and password. The ease of adding to this blog without makes blogging here easy. So many make you give the lenghth of that oh so important body part as their question # 697 before you can even jot hello. Thanx for the ease and not having to divulge how long my toenail is on my fourth toe attached in its normal location on my left foot!!!!!!!

  5. Hey Dave,

    This blog is just my standard old blog. It is really not associated with any of my websites directly, but it is just a supplement to them. And you are right, right now I am not asking for a log-in to post comments, but don’t get too excited. Once the Spam bots start to take notice, I am sure further precaustions will be made. cheers…matt
