Changing the Font & Style of Your H1 Tags

QUESTION: (Rhonda) I am having problems changing the font size of my H1text. Is this very important? If so, how do I go about changing it?

Changing the text and/or style of an H1 tag is simple in CSS.  It does not affect anything other than how the visitor sees it though (i.e., if you use a large font, it means nothing more than a smaller font, in SEO terms or how Google sees it).

You can change the H1 tag locally or in the CSS definition file.

If you want to change all of the H1 tag settings in your entire website, you would do this in the CSS file:

h1 {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would use the h1 tag as you normally would:
<h1>This is my H1 tag</h1>

You can define a class in the CSS file which allows you to define your new style whenever you wish anywhere on the site:

.h1style {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would add this class to your h1 tag, when you wish it:

<h1 class=”h1style”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

* Remember to add the “.” when defining it in the CSS to classify it as a class.

Finally, you can do it locally using a style attribute (without the CSS file):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px;”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

All of the above do the exact same thing.  Their use is based on how often you use the style and how you want it defined (whether globally or locally).

Also, remember you can add other styles to the same definition (like color):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px; color:red;”>This is my H1 Tag that is Red and 24px high</h1>

I find that being able to change the styles of my text for header and other standard tags to be quite invaluable!  Knowing a little bit of CSS can go a long way.  Give this a try!

The easiest thing to try first is the local definition using the style attribute. If this is working for you, consider creating or editing your own CSS file!

Good luck!  cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew Bredel begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlightingMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

It’s been a week and a half away of vacation…limited internet access, no cell phone and five TV stations from a mountains cabin.  I thought I was going to go batty! Still, being socially isolated from most of the electronics world, two bit of information continued to come my way…

The first one was the new Simpson’s Movie.  On my drive up, I stopped at a Burger King to find Simpson’s Movie marketing plastered on everything except my Whopper itself.  Then I needed to book a flight only to find Homer telling me which is the best price for me.  Then, one of the five TV stations that I received was FOX and if you have watched FOX anytime in the last couple of weeks, you would have thought that it should have been changed to the Simpson’s Channel.  The commercials hit you a mile-a-minute, and if it is not a commercial, it is the doughnut that replaces the “O” in Fox.  Now personally, I am a big Simpson’s fan but the thought of paying 10 bucks to see this movie did not really appeal to me.  Still, the movie made a killing and a lot of it was probably do to this in-your-face promotion.

On the other side of the Simpson’s move is this strange phenomenon  known as Cloverfield. If you have not heard of this, let me be the first to install this piece of viral marketing on you.  During the previews for the movie Transformers (in the theaters), there is this preview for a new science fiction movie where there is a major explosion and a message: “Created by J.J. Abrams” (You know, the creator of Lost).  The was no name of the movie given and no real idea what the movie is about.  It has been just referred to as “Cloverfield” and now has an official website called http://www.ethanhaaswasright.com.  And if you check out the website, it really makes little to no sense.  Huh?  What the heck is going on here?

That is exactly the point!  Because of all of the mystery, people are eating it up!  (Here I am writing a blog about it giving it two backlinks!)  People all over the internet are trying to put this mystery together.  And still, no one really has a clue what it is about.  This is classic viral and buzz marketing!  All of this was created by one trailer and a couple of websites.  The public has done the rest.  I have to admit that I am kind of curious about it myself (as well as my extended family who had a lengthy conversation about it…up in the mountains…with limited technology…and very little prompting).

The moral of this story is that there are many ways of effectively marketing a product.  Some ways can include in-your-face marketing, like The Simpson’s Movie where the use of partnerships and cash can go a long way.  Other ways include mystery and excitement.  This is more hit and miss, but if it hits and goes viral, the publicity can be enormous and the investment can be rather small.   I know most of us are not going to be releasing any major movies soon, but these tactics can be done at a smaller level and just as effective for the individual marketer.
