Do Link Exchanges Still Work?

QUESTION: (Gerald) I have a number of people asking me to exchange links. I have read that this is good, but can’t find anywhere how to do it. Any suggestions, or is there an article you have that would help me. Appreciate it.

Good question, Gerald, because we really don’t hear as much about link exchanges as we did in the past.  I think the big reason for it is it’s effectiveness (or lack thereof).  Search engine spiders are much smarter than they were 2 or 3 years agos.  And most will recognize a “link exchange” rather easily.

For those who don’t know what a link exchange is, it is when you approach another website (usually with similar content to yours) and ask them to place a nice, keyword-rich anchor text link back to your website.  In exchange, you will do the same for them.  Remember that an important part of SEO is backlinks (i.e., receiving links from other websites pointing back to you).  A few years ago, a lot of this “linking power” was represented by a Page Rank.  Getting high Page Rank websites to point back to you effectively will increase your own page rank.

Personally, I think Page Rank is a bit of a farce these days (at least the public one).  I do think the major search engines (like Google) have there own ranking system based on popularity, but it would not be public.  Still, getting links from “authority sites” with relevance (to your niche) is always key.

Now getting back to the question…I think link exchanges (or “reciprocal linking”) is really not going to help or hurt you.  Any backlink (in most cases) usually will help you.  But if there is a reciprocal link, the spiders will usually recognize this and probably not give you proper popularity for it.

Again, like everything SEO, this is speculation, but I know there has been a lot of abuse of link exchanges over the years (like link farms, paid text links, etc.) to draw a lot of attention to it.  I used to do it quite a bit.  I don’t really do it any more (unless I am quite friendly with the website and we exchange primarily for the traffic, not the SEO).  I think your efforts would be better suited to article writing/submission, press releases, even directory submissions.

You can also consider n-way link exchanges.  For a 3-way link exchange example: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, and Site C links to Site A.  You can do this rather deeply, too.  But still, the search engine spiders are smart and may start recognizing the linking footprints.  The larger the “n”, the better off you are…but of course, this is a hell of a lot more work and requires some skillful coordination.

Personally, I have become somewhat of an a-hole about link exchange requests.  I don’t get as many as I used to, but when I do I usually ignore them.

cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew BredelMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

I actually had another blog all lined up for today, but I could not resist to comment on launches for a second. I don’t know about you, but over the past few days, I have received DOZENS of emails talking about Mike Filsaime’s “Seven Figure Code“. Right now, I am working on planning my own product launch so this whole “event” grabbed my interest.

First of all, I do not have anything against this product. Mike Filsaime produces a lot of quality products and he is an excellent speaker (I have seen him twice). My problem with this and many of the other launches that I have been seeing these days is all of the *fluff* that go with them. The names of these new packages, for starters, cracks me up! You know: The “Seven Figure Code” and then you go to the website and see this DaVinci-Code like theme. I feel like I am entering into a Las Vegas theme hotel.

The other thing about Mike is his “place” in the internet marketing world: He is well known and has a lot of supporters. This is good for a few reasons:

1) He can get them to participate in his conferences (which this current product is based on)

2) He can get some killer testimonials.

3) He has a lot of very (VERY) established internet marketers to help promote his products.

It is quite impressive, in fact! Do you think Brad Fallon normally creates videos for any Joe Blow? I will guarantee you no. So, after 20 emails, each being about 3 miles long from some of the top internet gurus in the business, what do you do? Is this product going to earn you 7-figures? I hate to say it, buy probably not. Still, the people that are teaching this all make this kind of dough. They must have something important to say, right?

So your question to me is probably: “Matt, are you going to buy the 7 Figure Code for $500?” My answer right now is no…and it is not because of the product or the price. I have met a lot of the presenters and have paid a hell of a lot more money to see their presentations in the past. My problem is time. I can almost guarantee that there will be some really good tips that can improve my business today in these videos, but I already have a bookshelf of videos that will help me right now, too.

Don’t think that joining the 7 Figure Code (or any other major launch) is going to make you rich. Only YOU can make yourself rich. The hype is exciting, and the deals are intriguing, but you need to ask yourself before you buy anything: What are the GOALS you wish to accomplish from buying this product. Is buying this product a part of your plan of success? If I had the time right now, sure I would buy this, but I have about 12,000 other things I am currently working on. The same goes with any other “Rich Jerk” or “DayJobKiller” style release where their is a flashly gimmick and a whole lot of hype to get you to buy these products. Believe it or not, but most of these products do offer some merit. The question you need to pose to yourself is: “Are you ready for it now” and “Does it solve a specific need”.

When I first needed extra money in my home, I first researched the web, found an affiliate marketing eBook and bought it (and it ultimately changed my life!). When I joined StomperNet for close to $800 per month, I needed some serious SEO help. I researched the product, I liked it and it has really paid off. Right now, the 7 Figure Code sounds interesting and it *may* be a boost that I need to take my business to the next level, but before I get sidetracked, I need to focus on the current tasks at hand. If I am always buying and researching products, I am distracting myself from my most important task which is building an online business!

  1. [...] review (or at least a preliminary analysis) on a product by Mike Filsaime called the 7 Figure Code: The Seven Figure Code Hype. At the time, I was not planning on buying, but being an internet marketing information [...]

  2. I just got an email from Mike Filsaime, apparently he is leaving the guru business and giving The Seven Figure Code away for free. What you say should be said more often. We as marketers should practice focus more than any other skill. Buying products should be based on careful consideration which takes time and planning. A huge red flag is pressure during the sales process. A popular tactic is creating fear of loss. Loss of time, money, and success are common.

  3. I was disappointed with the new 7 Figure Code offer.

    Hype? Yes!

    Something new? No!

I already have a copy of the Butterfly Marketing Manuscript and two copies of the 7 Figure Code report. I don’t need others for $16 USD.

The pre-launch lead us to believe that we would receive content similar to Stephen Pierce’s video without cost. This is not what is on offer today.

Expect to see a lot of copycat launches like the 7 Figure Code as the “gurus” come up with new strategies to circumvent the new FTC regulations for full disclosure.

This will include a lot of “products” that are repurposed because they can’t sell under the new guidelines.

  4. I was excited but this is just another free scam that costs hundreds don’t waste your time. They lie flat out for me this means all a lie

  5. For some reson all the hype then the lie pissed me off wiling to spend money I dont even have to trash liars.
this will be one of many posts u see from me I am laid off and having nothing but time to trash Mike. Disappointing when someone thats not suppose to be scam is just like the rest makes his info useless an lies like the rest. Say your giving free stuff give it then up sell as norm this just way htpe and lies. SAD very sad mike your low life like rest

  6. [...] The Seven Figure Code Hype, by Matthew Bredel [...]

  7. I am going to try to stay “unbiased” here, but go with me for a second…

First, I am watching how these gurus are handling the new FTC regulations, too. There has been this steady “unrest” in the home business niche for the last few weeks now while many people are trying to mold their current, aggressive marketing campaigns to comply with new FTC rules and guidelines.

Some are pulling out. Others are trying to re-invent their business. Others are using it to their advantage in their copy. I think that is what we are seeing from Mike here.

Understand that Mike is an aggressive marketer who follows fundmental funnel marketing very well. I do personally think this current offer is fair, though (suffice it to say, it is laden with up-sells, down-sells, and every other sell you can think of). At the end of the day, we all have choices. I have chosen to buy some of Mike products in the past and decline others. I have also bought products and returned them I have not liked (this no problems) while there have been strategies I have learned from him that have made me a lot of money.

I personally like Mike’s new marketing strategies and don’t consider them lies, either. Just marketing. cheers…matt

  8. Just a quick and deep thank you - for reminding me the oh-so-easy-to forget most important rule, and value, and need: listen to myself and do what leads me in my real path.
Really appreciate your deep honesty and wishing you success and continued authenticity along the way.

  9. Interesting reading all the comments. Yes, I purchased the free Butterfly Marketing course and the 7 figure code.

I suspect they will be part of my reference library and not get used! The bonus audios are interesting even if they are a few years out of date. This is a way to rid yourself of excess stock while making offers for other products. It is a very smart strategy.

I agree to follow your hunches on what to purchase as we all need training, but we don’t need everything. I just hope that by the time I launch my well thought out product that everyone isn’t sick of spending money on stuff that is irrelevant to them!
