Do Link Exchanges Still Work?

QUESTION: (Gerald) I have a number of people asking me to exchange links. I have read that this is good, but can’t find anywhere how to do it. Any suggestions, or is there an article you have that would help me. Appreciate it.

Good question, Gerald, because we really don’t hear as much about link exchanges as we did in the past.  I think the big reason for it is it’s effectiveness (or lack thereof).  Search engine spiders are much smarter than they were 2 or 3 years agos.  And most will recognize a “link exchange” rather easily.

For those who don’t know what a link exchange is, it is when you approach another website (usually with similar content to yours) and ask them to place a nice, keyword-rich anchor text link back to your website.  In exchange, you will do the same for them.  Remember that an important part of SEO is backlinks (i.e., receiving links from other websites pointing back to you).  A few years ago, a lot of this “linking power” was represented by a Page Rank.  Getting high Page Rank websites to point back to you effectively will increase your own page rank.

Personally, I think Page Rank is a bit of a farce these days (at least the public one).  I do think the major search engines (like Google) have there own ranking system based on popularity, but it would not be public.  Still, getting links from “authority sites” with relevance (to your niche) is always key.

Now getting back to the question…I think link exchanges (or “reciprocal linking”) is really not going to help or hurt you.  Any backlink (in most cases) usually will help you.  But if there is a reciprocal link, the spiders will usually recognize this and probably not give you proper popularity for it.

Again, like everything SEO, this is speculation, but I know there has been a lot of abuse of link exchanges over the years (like link farms, paid text links, etc.) to draw a lot of attention to it.  I used to do it quite a bit.  I don’t really do it any more (unless I am quite friendly with the website and we exchange primarily for the traffic, not the SEO).  I think your efforts would be better suited to article writing/submission, press releases, even directory submissions.

You can also consider n-way link exchanges.  For a 3-way link exchange example: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, and Site C links to Site A.  You can do this rather deeply, too.  But still, the search engine spiders are smart and may start recognizing the linking footprints.  The larger the “n”, the better off you are…but of course, this is a hell of a lot more work and requires some skillful coordination.

Personally, I have become somewhat of an a-hole about link exchange requests.  I don’t get as many as I used to, but when I do I usually ignore them.

cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew BredelMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

“Can You Make Money Promoting Physical Products Online as an Affiliate Marketer?”

Kind of an interesting question!

For years, I have read countless ebooks and ways to create income from home and many of them point to becoming an affiliate marketer for information products.

Why?

Simple: the combination of both a marketing platform that requires no fulfillment (i.e., affiliate marketing) plus the high commission structure of information products
makes it a low risk, high gain investment.

STILL, it is a highly competitive market and there is the  notion of information products being an simple avenue for multi-level marketing (MLM).

Now personally, I don’t buy into the MLM concept of information products (in most cases).  In the “home based business” niche, this is highly arguable.  Still, I personally have found success outside of this niche using techniques I have learned through my own personal studies from “home biz op products” and trial and error.

But the question still remains:  What about physical products?

Can you make money selling items from Amazon.com? or Walmart.com? or JoesPetSupplies.com (I made that one up!).

The lower commission rates may scare some of you, but then again, this should not deter you at all!

I have had my own successes in the physical product marketing promoting products such as TMX Elmo, Playstation 3, Webkinz, and many other products.

Still, this is not my major source of income.

Can you make a living promoting physical products?

That seems to be the next logical question and one that I will answer in the form of a podcast…

I met Deb Carney (from TeamLoxly and Loxly Gallery) back in January at Affiliate Summit Las Vegas.  She is also a moderator at the popular ABestWeb forums, a community devoted to affiliate marketing.

After spending over 2 hours with her, I learned a LOT of things (she has a lot to say, let me tell you!).  She has been in the online business for over 10 years and through our discussions, she’s well hearsed in almost anything to do with affiliate marketing.

And her focus is (and has been) physical products.

Listen to the Podcast (above) to learn more about Deb and her strategies and advice on how to make money online through marketing physical products.

Too few people are affiliate marketers for physical products (and there is so much more opportunity to effectively promote it versus information…that is, if you do it right!).

P.S.  Now this is very cool!  Through Deb’s photo gallery website (at LoxlyGallery.com), she has created a section called the “Passion Collection”.  Here, she and I have created our own print (which includes a picture of mine with my own quote) that is for sale. For a product like this, we donate 50% of the sale to charity (and I have chosen to forgo my affiliate commission on this so the actual price is cut in half, too!).

Be sure to check it out!  If you are looking for a little bit of inspiration personally from me, this is it!

(I already have one of her Passion Collection images hanging in front of me right now!)

  1. Gorgeous picture, Matt!

  2. What are physical products? Is it an umbrella word used so that people will be touched with interest before they realize it is vitamins and supplements?

  3. Hey Ginger…

Really interesting point here! And you are right to some degree. (it is worth a post all in itself!): using physical products to get leads. This is a part of the industry, no doubt, but there are ways of making a living without this bait & switch technique (Deb provides a few in the podcast). And as you also say, you see this in a lot of the industries like vitamins and supplements (products that are for hard to reach clients in conventional means). This is part of lead generation techniques, not really affiliate marketing.

    Great point!

    cheers…matt

  4. Matt, that is a great write up and thank YOU for talking to me. Your print is beautiful and I will be sending you a printed copy shortly.

Ginger, “physical products” just means retail products that you buy online like pajamas and books and posters. Vitamins and “supplements” were more lucrative in the past, but now are a niche just like information products where some people are good at promoting them and some aren’t.

My focus is on real products that people buy online everyday that affiliates can be selling that is a consistent income stream. People do buy books at Amazon every day through affiliate links where they read a book review. People buy posters everyday online that they can’t buy in the local store because they local store can’t possibly offer them all in the space that they have.

There is a lot of opportunity for affiliates that want to add retail affiliate marketing to their already successful information product marketing.

  5. (Didn’t I say that Deborah is awesome!…well said!) cheers…matt
