Changing the Font & Style of Your H1 Tags

QUESTION: (Rhonda) I am having problems changing the font size of my H1text. Is this very important? If so, how do I go about changing it?

Changing the text and/or style of an H1 tag is simple in CSS.  It does not affect anything other than how the visitor sees it though (i.e., if you use a large font, it means nothing more than a smaller font, in SEO terms or how Google sees it).

You can change the H1 tag locally or in the CSS definition file.

If you want to change all of the H1 tag settings in your entire website, you would do this in the CSS file:

h1 {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would use the h1 tag as you normally would:
<h1>This is my H1 tag</h1>

You can define a class in the CSS file which allows you to define your new style whenever you wish anywhere on the site:

.h1style {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would add this class to your h1 tag, when you wish it:

<h1 class=”h1style”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

* Remember to add the “.” when defining it in the CSS to classify it as a class.

Finally, you can do it locally using a style attribute (without the CSS file):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px;”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

All of the above do the exact same thing.  Their use is based on how often you use the style and how you want it defined (whether globally or locally).

Also, remember you can add other styles to the same definition (like color):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px; color:red;”>This is my H1 Tag that is Red and 24px high</h1>

I find that being able to change the styles of my text for header and other standard tags to be quite invaluable!  Knowing a little bit of CSS can go a long way.  Give this a try!

The easiest thing to try first is the local definition using the style attribute. If this is working for you, consider creating or editing your own CSS file!

Good luck!  cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew Bredel begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlightingMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

While my wife is away in Australia, I chose to take the time (or lack of!) to re-organize the office and my re-set my business, from an organizational stand-point: New Office, new computer, new home server…and a lot of bad video lighting!

I can’t say that this post is the most content driven information that I have produced.  Frankly, my mind is elsewhere!

Sarah comes back tomorrow (after 16 days away) and the kids have come close to driving me off a bridge.  (Actually, they have been rather good…being a “single parent of 3″ is a lot of work!).

So while she is away, I made the executive decision to focus my time in on activities that I have been *meaning* to do, but never seem to have the time to do it.

I moved my office down the hall:  Bigger room, Brighter room.

Believe it or not, it is going to be 2 years this month that I have worked as an internet marketer full-time.  I needed a little bit of a change!

So the room and office move is nearly complete.

The second thing that needed to be done was update my technology.  Can you imagine that I have run a 6-figure business now for years with less than $2000 of electric hardware?

I recently had a “data scare” with one of my back-ups.  I have been using USB drives lately to back-up my computer, but those pieces of *&$# seem to keep crashing on me.  I got one of those new HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server to solve the problem, while I also back-up on Amazon S3. So far, so good, but the verdict is still out!  (I’m actually planning on writing a review on it soon!)

I also just upgraded my old 1GB RAM, 2 year old computer for a nice, 4 GB RAM Intel computer.  (It is tough to believe that I was actually do so much video editing on that old machine).

My point here is that we sometimes need to pull away from the norm when it comes to our business and reassess the structure, the technology and the well-being of our online ventures.

This trip away for my wife gave me the reason to do this, but now that I am finished, I realized that I should have done this sooner.

I already feel better about my back-ups, my computer runs 10 times faster now, and the change of scenery, more space and new office just revitalizes my excitement to build more online stuff!

Making money online is not just about computers and marketing, it is sometimes about the physical structure of the business, as well!

cheers…matt

p.s.  the beard will probably be shaved off when Sarah arrives…it itches like hell, too!

  1. I hear you Matt,

    We receintly moved into a new home. We got rid of my old desk as we had plans to get a new one. So while I waited, my computer was set up on a coffee table in my living room.

    It took 4 months for my desk to come! So the coffee table has been my work space. Now I have my new office all set up and it looks very pro.

    I think working with the right equipment is important to successful Internet Marketing. I hope to have a very simular post going up on my blog soon too.

    Cheers!

    Jeromy (aka hillbilly)
