In my last blog, I went over what happens when you pick out a product to market that does not pay out. Realize that the majority of products that one can promote in the world are, frankly, not going to make you a lot of money as an affiliate marketer. As you become more experienced as a marketer and you have the resources to produce bigger websites and attract larger number of visitors, product doors will begin to open for you and you find yourself profitting on products that a majority of the affiliate marketing public cannot make a penny on.
So where do you begin? Here are a few ideas to help the beginner:
- Choose products with large commissions - Information products are an excellent choice for the beginner because of their large payouts.
- Popular products - Choose products that are selling. Many affiliate marketing programs provide relative indexes as to which products are selling the most.
- Not the most popular products - Choosing what is selling is good, but choosing the most popular one may put you in a hyper-competitive market.
- Assess the competition - How much are people promoting these products? How many people are sponsoring ads on Google Adwords?
- Test the product - Prior to any major commitment to a product, it is recommended to create a test landing page and start sending some Adwords traffic to it. This will give you more insight to the bidding price as well as help you determine if people are really willing to buy a product like this or not.
But no matter what I tell you above, picking products is a science. No matter how many rules that I give you, some products will be goldmines while others will be lemons. And I know that I always say this but:
“The sooner you fail, the sooner you will succeed.”
My last blog is an excellent example of this. Even though my “custom children’s book” was an utter failure from an earnings standpoint, it was a huge stepping stone to find the products that I do promote well. Studying the failures is usually more beneficial than studying the successes. But again, you will never succeed unless you try.

My name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer.
For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...
