Whether you’re selling on eBay or on your own site, the physical products business is a highly competitive one during the holidays. Every retailer out there wants a piece of the pie. Are you struggling this year to get your few crumbs? Here’s some food for thought for next year.
Plan Early
Start planning in July. If you want to launch a new online store, look at the potential products and hot ticket items early. You can find a lot of information available about what’s going to be a big seller during the holidays.
SEO
Start your organic search efforts early, too. Start optimizing early for keywords and as it becomes more apparent where your traffic is coming from you can work in some long tail and LSI efforts as well. Your site stats can be a goldmine to help you see where traffic is coming from so you can capitalize on that traffic. For instance, use search terms that people find your site with to see if they actually find what they searched for when they landed on your page and tweak your copy if necessary to increase your conversion rates.
Start a List!
Give away something of value early in the year to help you to build a big mailing list. Work on wooing your list all year long and then when the holiday season is close you’ll be in a good position to sell to your list of subscribers.

Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...
