If you’ve yet to fully realise the potential of Twitter, today’s post can help you get more followers which can help you get more success. In order to ‘get’ Twitter you need to follow and be followed. The more people following you and reading your “Tweets” the more potential Twitter can bring you.
I’m using it for self-promotion but I also enjoy the water cooler atmosphere. I get tips and leads and interesting reading material from my followers and those I follow. If someone interesting on my list posts a link I do check it out. Most people do.
What do I get out of following other people?
First, if I don’t follow anyone, most aren’t likely to follow me.
People who follow me are really helpful and:
1. Re-tweet my interesting tweets which often include URLS
2. Stumble/Digg my tweets when I ask them to
3. Say my @Twitter name in our discussions which makes some of their followers curious about me so they check me out, find my tweets intriguing and sparkling in their tone and nature and then decide to follow me too.
Here are some tips to get you more followers:
• Search on Twitter for keywords related to your niche. Add those followers
• Look at the public timeline for people’s questions that you can answer. That can get you more potential followers
• Have conversations with people and ask questions. When they answer, they’ll use your @name and get more people interested in finding out who you are
• Get involved in the interesting conversations because people will see others use your @name and check you out
• Respond to queries from influential bloggers who might also reply directly to you and show their base of followers your name
• Ask questions. People following the public timeline might answer and follow
• Put your Twitter widget on your blog and tell people to follow you
• If someone who’s not a spammer follows you, consider following them also. Some Twitterers get indignant if you don’t and will unfollow you. But:
• Strive for more followers than you’re following if possible. With the number of spammers on Twitter, this shouldn’t be hard and most spammers follow you, direct message you once and then move on to their next spam project so it’s really not that disturbing to you and creates the image of you being very follow-worthy to anyone browsing your profile.

My name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer.
For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...
