Changing the Font & Style of Your H1 Tags

QUESTION: (Rhonda) I am having problems changing the font size of my H1text. Is this very important? If so, how do I go about changing it?

Changing the text and/or style of an H1 tag is simple in CSS.  It does not affect anything other than how the visitor sees it though (i.e., if you use a large font, it means nothing more than a smaller font, in SEO terms or how Google sees it).

You can change the H1 tag locally or in the CSS definition file.

If you want to change all of the H1 tag settings in your entire website, you would do this in the CSS file:

h1 {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would use the h1 tag as you normally would:
<h1>This is my H1 tag</h1>

You can define a class in the CSS file which allows you to define your new style whenever you wish anywhere on the site:

.h1style {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would add this class to your h1 tag, when you wish it:

<h1 class=”h1style”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

* Remember to add the “.” when defining it in the CSS to classify it as a class.

Finally, you can do it locally using a style attribute (without the CSS file):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px;”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

All of the above do the exact same thing.  Their use is based on how often you use the style and how you want it defined (whether globally or locally).

Also, remember you can add other styles to the same definition (like color):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px; color:red;”>This is my H1 Tag that is Red and 24px high</h1>

I find that being able to change the styles of my text for header and other standard tags to be quite invaluable!  Knowing a little bit of CSS can go a long way.  Give this a try!

The easiest thing to try first is the local definition using the style attribute. If this is working for you, consider creating or editing your own CSS file!

Good luck!  cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew Bredel begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlightingMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

This is one of those stories that I hate to share as an internet marketer (because it is kind of embarrassing).

For about 2 months (way back when), I was DETERMINED to increase my ranking for the high powered keyword make money online.  My goal:  To be on page one of Google for make money online.  I did my due-SEO-diligence by getting lots of back links, wrote lots of good articles and internally structured my website to cater for this keyword.  Sure enough, I DID IT!  I got the #8 position and as I expected, my traffic started to dramatically increase.

I’d be a millionaire!

Suffice to say, not only did I NOT make millions from ranking highly for make money online, I barely made ANY money.

So what happened?  Essentially, I did not provide any good mechanism for conversion on my landing page.  They came to my page, they read about me and TheWebReviewer…and then they left.

I talk a lot about “Quality” keywords and in this case, you could make the argument that make money online did not have any quality.  And that is what I initially thought.  But really, that is not the case.  The term is very relevant to my website and a keyword like this DOES pose a problem which I can help solve.  But understanding HOW to convert specific keywords is the trick.

Not all keywords are created equal but most keywords have a potential of making you money.

Stepping back from this situation bares the solution…

Who is actually typing in make money online?

Answer:  People who are JUST STARTING to learn about their options.  Are they really going to go to my site and immediately click on my products or links and make an immediate sale?  HECK NO!  (By the way, there ARE keywords that are primed for such a visitor!)

Solution:  In this case, get the opt-in!  They are not ready to buy now, but 7 websites from now they may.  Sure, I did not make any immediate sales, but the lead is probably even more valuable.  These visitors are EASIER to convert when they know what is already out there.

Understand what I am getting at here?

In NetWebVideo, I talk a lot about broad, focus, and money keywords.  Broad and focus keywords are usually not used to bring in immediate sales, but can be very effective in lead generation.  Still, these terms are usually highly competitive and can be difficult to rank for organically.

What do you do?  My strategies of keyword research still hold here:  Optimize for your money keywords and the broad and focus tier keywords will come in time…and when they do, be prepared to adjust your landing page accordingly to the types of people who are arriving!  (We spend way too much time attracting visitors to let them run away!)
