Changing the Font & Style of Your H1 Tags

QUESTION: (Rhonda) I am having problems changing the font size of my H1text. Is this very important? If so, how do I go about changing it?

Changing the text and/or style of an H1 tag is simple in CSS.  It does not affect anything other than how the visitor sees it though (i.e., if you use a large font, it means nothing more than a smaller font, in SEO terms or how Google sees it).

You can change the H1 tag locally or in the CSS definition file.

If you want to change all of the H1 tag settings in your entire website, you would do this in the CSS file:

h1 {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would use the h1 tag as you normally would:
<h1>This is my H1 tag</h1>

You can define a class in the CSS file which allows you to define your new style whenever you wish anywhere on the site:

.h1style {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would add this class to your h1 tag, when you wish it:

<h1 class=”h1style”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

* Remember to add the “.” when defining it in the CSS to classify it as a class.

Finally, you can do it locally using a style attribute (without the CSS file):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px;”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

All of the above do the exact same thing.  Their use is based on how often you use the style and how you want it defined (whether globally or locally).

Also, remember you can add other styles to the same definition (like color):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px; color:red;”>This is my H1 Tag that is Red and 24px high</h1>

I find that being able to change the styles of my text for header and other standard tags to be quite invaluable!  Knowing a little bit of CSS can go a long way.  Give this a try!

The easiest thing to try first is the local definition using the style attribute. If this is working for you, consider creating or editing your own CSS file!

Good luck!  cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew Bredel begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlightingMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

Working at home (as well as working in an office, cubicle or behind any desk) all pose the same problem to all of us:  bad backs, bad posture, and a crooked neck.  Being an internet marketer, I find myself behind a desk and a computer over 8 hours per day and because of that, the pains have never been so painful.

Over the past 3 months, this has gotten bad to the point of daily lotions, muscle relaxants, back braces (and a Vicodin every once in awhile!).

While at my CPA’s office a few weeks ago, I saw his wife working on a desk propped up on cinder blocks.  “What are you doing Treycie?”  Well, she was having the same problems as me.  The solution was simple:  Why not stand?

I thought it was a bit silly at first, but I thought I would give it a try (anything would be better than sitting).  So I grabbed a few storage boxes and created a temporary “lift” on my desk.

You know what?  I LOVE IT!  I find my productivity is greater due to the easier mobility and the pains in my back virtually go away.

Now I can’t do it every day, because being on your feet does take a bit more physical energy.  You burn about 200 more calories per day by standing (according to Calorie-Counter.com. That is an extra donut in the morning!.  But I do miss my chair so I try to alternate every other day.

And this still should not deter you from using good ergonomic practices, having a good chair and performing proper stretching throughout the day.  Give it a try and see what you think!  I know many of you are stuck behind desks for most of the day…why not avoid the constant aches and pains while burning a few extra calories while you are at it!

cheers…matt

  1. Hey, thanks for sharing this. I just went to the chiropractor yesterday for stuff I’m pretty sure is caused by my sitting in front of the computer for all hours. I’m really going to try this! It’s easier than paying the chiropractor…

  2. Another great option is to get a very big stability ball and sit on that while you work. Not only can it eliminate back problems but it also strengthens your core AND will help with creativity. Some studies were done where they put kids on stability balls in the classroom and it enhanced their productivity.

  3. We actually have some of those balls (from when Sarah was pregnant…for some reason, we thought we needed that for baby #1???). I’ll give it a shot (and maybe even record it some day???)

  4. I don’t do it constantly but often do it for an hour or two a day with music on, especially when I want to brainstorm or bounce while I am doing something a bit mindless and repetitive.
