Do Link Exchanges Still Work?

QUESTION: (Gerald) I have a number of people asking me to exchange links. I have read that this is good, but can’t find anywhere how to do it. Any suggestions, or is there an article you have that would help me. Appreciate it.

Good question, Gerald, because we really don’t hear as much about link exchanges as we did in the past.  I think the big reason for it is it’s effectiveness (or lack thereof).  Search engine spiders are much smarter than they were 2 or 3 years agos.  And most will recognize a “link exchange” rather easily.

For those who don’t know what a link exchange is, it is when you approach another website (usually with similar content to yours) and ask them to place a nice, keyword-rich anchor text link back to your website.  In exchange, you will do the same for them.  Remember that an important part of SEO is backlinks (i.e., receiving links from other websites pointing back to you).  A few years ago, a lot of this “linking power” was represented by a Page Rank.  Getting high Page Rank websites to point back to you effectively will increase your own page rank.

Personally, I think Page Rank is a bit of a farce these days (at least the public one).  I do think the major search engines (like Google) have there own ranking system based on popularity, but it would not be public.  Still, getting links from “authority sites” with relevance (to your niche) is always key.

Now getting back to the question…I think link exchanges (or “reciprocal linking”) is really not going to help or hurt you.  Any backlink (in most cases) usually will help you.  But if there is a reciprocal link, the spiders will usually recognize this and probably not give you proper popularity for it.

Again, like everything SEO, this is speculation, but I know there has been a lot of abuse of link exchanges over the years (like link farms, paid text links, etc.) to draw a lot of attention to it.  I used to do it quite a bit.  I don’t really do it any more (unless I am quite friendly with the website and we exchange primarily for the traffic, not the SEO).  I think your efforts would be better suited to article writing/submission, press releases, even directory submissions.

You can also consider n-way link exchanges.  For a 3-way link exchange example: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, and Site C links to Site A.  You can do this rather deeply, too.  But still, the search engine spiders are smart and may start recognizing the linking footprints.  The larger the “n”, the better off you are…but of course, this is a hell of a lot more work and requires some skillful coordination.

Personally, I have become somewhat of an a-hole about link exchange requests.  I don’t get as many as I used to, but when I do I usually ignore them.

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew BredelMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

Over the past month, I have felt a lot of rumblings throughout the internet due to the lasted FTC rulings on Testimonials and Endorsements. This IS going to change the way we market online, but who really understands this? Here, I sit down with expert internet law attorney Linda Goodman (from TheGoodmanLawFirm.com) to help me understand the fate of my own websites and its affect on this internet marketing world.

Htaccess & Other URL Redirect Methods

I really don’t know what else to say, but I want to take a few steps back and play Socrates for a second.

If making a career and massive amounts of wealth online was easy, wouldn’t everyone be doing it?

“Make $500/day in the next 24 hours”…WHERE?  Starting from scratch?

“If I were to fill out 10 paid surveys per day at $10 each, I would bring in an extra $3000!”…Huh?  Where are you going to get 300 surveys to fill out?  A Paid Survey program?  You would be doing well if you got 10 surveys in a week.

“Data Entry:  Make HUNDREDS per day with only filling out 4 line forms!”…WOW!  This form must be really important!  (And it is…it is Google Adwords, and it is advertising you are filling out…AND PAYING FOR!)

“Process Rebates From Home!”…Do you really think Nordstrom’s is really going to be sending their rebate processing tasks to people who they don’t even know?  This is a big twist in words.  In this case, “Rebate” is referring to affiliate commissions and “Processing” is the act of receiving these commissions.  (You still need to market it!)

“Templates and Websites in a Box! - Your turn-key solution!  Proven to work!  We give you the website, email templates, and copy and you just SIT BACK AND WATCH THE MONEY FLOW!”  If it was that easy, why aren’t they doing it themselves?  There is a law of diminishing returns and if everyone was doing the SAME thing, do you think this would work?  Sure, you can make money with this, but marketing and “OUT-of-the-box” marketing is what is going to make something like this work!

“Make millions with Forex!” - Sure!, if you have millions to invest!

“Close to a HALF TRILLION Dollars in Grants WAITING to be Claimed!”  That is a whole lot of money.  If I could only get 0.001% of that I would be rich!  The process:  Find a grant that you could qualify for (and for most of us, that is very few), fill out a lengthy form, submit it, follow-up, receive a “run-around”, probably resubmit again, and maybe (someday) you will receive it.  Remember that grants are there for a purpose (and that is usually not to support a work-at-home lifestyle).

Do you see my point here?  If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!  There are always exceptions to all of these rules (and these exceptions are what drive these industries).  People DO process rebates and participate in research forums (like paid surveys) and make millions in Forex markets and receive large government grants to support their lifestyles.

But most of these are NOT found on websites showing you how to do it.  Trivial, easy, brainless tasks are usually outsourced overseas these days for pennies on the dollar.

Online business, like affiliate marketing, eCommerce, blogging, etc are great ways of making money online, but they take time and effort before they become profitable.  In the long run, the $500/day dream is achievable.

My best advice for those of you wanting to make extra money on the side without having to build a business (or website for that matter) would be to simply freelance.

If you have any skills such as writing, typing, coding, speaking, writing in forums, twittering, MySpacing, etc., there are tons of jobs and people (like myself) constantly on the hunt to outsource our own work.  Services like eLance, Rent-a-Coder, and GoFreelance offer services to help you find work or simply hang out in the forums of internet marketers (like the Warrior forum).  Check out Craigslist.org, too.

You will be amazed at how many people are looking to get their little jobs done.

And yes, I understand that we are always looking and HOPING for that big break online.  But at some time, you need to make the decision on what is more important right now:

Finding the “Big Break”  or Just Making Money Online

  1. All i can say is AMEN! I’m so sick of people wanting something for nothing. Everyone wants to make money online with no work and no money invested sounds perfectly logical to me.

  2. It seems logical, but still, that instant sense of excitement (and hope!) when that next “get quick rich” idea surfaces, we stop and take a look. Being able to identify these are the key, though! Marketers are TOUGH and will tell you almost anything to get you to buy! cheers…matt

  3. Sorry by my broken English.Of cource all these offers are very rubbish.Even it You want to earn little money with part time, you practically will get nothing.Avoid ExpressPayd Surveys.

  4. It seems like something is missing, no?

  5. I agree, those ads full of empty promises and hype are just to lure people in but there’s no truth to them. There are some easy ways to make money online but most of them won’t give you much in return for your time. To actually build up a significant online income you will need to put in a lot of time and hard work. If it were so easy then everyone would do it. Freelancing can be good as you said, but it’s not for everyone and you still need to work hard.
