Do Link Exchanges Still Work?

QUESTION: (Gerald) I have a number of people asking me to exchange links. I have read that this is good, but can’t find anywhere how to do it. Any suggestions, or is there an article you have that would help me. Appreciate it.

Good question, Gerald, because we really don’t hear as much about link exchanges as we did in the past.  I think the big reason for it is it’s effectiveness (or lack thereof).  Search engine spiders are much smarter than they were 2 or 3 years agos.  And most will recognize a “link exchange” rather easily.

For those who don’t know what a link exchange is, it is when you approach another website (usually with similar content to yours) and ask them to place a nice, keyword-rich anchor text link back to your website.  In exchange, you will do the same for them.  Remember that an important part of SEO is backlinks (i.e., receiving links from other websites pointing back to you).  A few years ago, a lot of this “linking power” was represented by a Page Rank.  Getting high Page Rank websites to point back to you effectively will increase your own page rank.

Personally, I think Page Rank is a bit of a farce these days (at least the public one).  I do think the major search engines (like Google) have there own ranking system based on popularity, but it would not be public.  Still, getting links from “authority sites” with relevance (to your niche) is always key.

Now getting back to the question…I think link exchanges (or “reciprocal linking”) is really not going to help or hurt you.  Any backlink (in most cases) usually will help you.  But if there is a reciprocal link, the spiders will usually recognize this and probably not give you proper popularity for it.

Again, like everything SEO, this is speculation, but I know there has been a lot of abuse of link exchanges over the years (like link farms, paid text links, etc.) to draw a lot of attention to it.  I used to do it quite a bit.  I don’t really do it any more (unless I am quite friendly with the website and we exchange primarily for the traffic, not the SEO).  I think your efforts would be better suited to article writing/submission, press releases, even directory submissions.

You can also consider n-way link exchanges.  For a 3-way link exchange example: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, and Site C links to Site A.  You can do this rather deeply, too.  But still, the search engine spiders are smart and may start recognizing the linking footprints.  The larger the “n”, the better off you are…but of course, this is a hell of a lot more work and requires some skillful coordination.

Personally, I have become somewhat of an a-hole about link exchange requests.  I don’t get as many as I used to, but when I do I usually ignore them.

cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew BredelMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

Exposing the FTC Regulations on Endorsements and Testimonials

Over the past month, I have felt a lot of rumblings throughout the internet due to the lasted FTC rulings on Testimonials and Endorsements. This IS going to change the way we market online, but who really understands this? Here, I sit down with expert internet law attorney Linda Goodman (from TheGoodmanLawFirm.com) to help me understand the fate of my own websites and its affect on this internet marketing world.

About one year ago, I wrote a review (or at least a preliminary analysis) on a product by Mike Filsaime called the 7 Figure Code: The Seven Figure Code Hype. At the time, I was not planning on buying, but being an internet marketing information junkie…and “TheWebReviewer” for that matter, I caved in and bought it. I actually thought that is was pretty good and well worth the $500 I paid. I got through about 80% of the videos (which is usually about as much as I get in any DVD or video program that I join). All in all, it had some great content and I did end up use some of this information to grow my business.

Almost 12 months later we revisit the Seven Figure Code in its documented form called the 7 Figure Secrets. Here, Mike has gone out and paid (a rather top name) copywriter and internet marketer to go, watch all of the videos and create a report of all 16 videos.

So what’s the hype this time? Simple: It is FREE! And not only that, he is going to ship it (along with access to his current selling and very popular Butterfly Marketing Transcripts) to you in the mail. The Caveats?

1) He does charge shipping ($7.95)

2) You do subscribe to a monthly printed magazine (after the first month’s free trial…this can be canceled at any time, though, rather easily).

So it is worth the $7.95 to receive a copy of both the 7 Figure Secrets and Butterfly Marketing Transcript?

YOU BET! I actually have digitial copies of both and I still bought in:

7 Figure Secrets Receipt

Of course, with any Mike Filsaime product, you have about 10 other pages of additional offers to see, but once you get to the end, you can immediately download your copy of the Butterfly Marketing Manuscript.

(Plus, I added my own little bonus of an eBook that I have not yet released called The Frustrated Affiliate. This is a preview copy of what is to come soon, but I do think it is some of my best content to date!).

The Frustrated Affiliate

Is the becoming the silliest blog entry or what? Totally unorganized, and pretty lame from a content stand-point, but the purpose is clear:

Take advantage of offers like this when they come! It is a lot of good content with little to no risk. And to get this plus a copy of my Frustrated Affiliate, simply go to:

7 Figure Secrets for FREE

cheers…matt

  1. Matt, Concerning your review of the 7 figure code. When you say that the required sign up for the magazine is a little “sneaky”, you’re wrong, it’s a lot sneaky. Frank Kern “reviewed” the product too, and said you could uncheck the magazine box, but when Frank tried to uncheck it on his video review, it did not work. In my opinion being “forced” to take the monthly magazine, even if you can stop it easily, is still “sneaky”…no matter how good the “free” content is. Perhaps, Mike is trying to get his magazine going this way so he can go to potential advertisers and say, “Hey, look how many
subscribers I have..” because in the print magazine world subscriber “eyeballs” is what counts, nice strategy but still “sneaky”. Just my opinion.

  2. I do not hide the fact that you must initially subscribe to this magazine both here and in my full review. From my understanding of this, you can cancel your subscription to the magazine prior to being ever charged for this fee.

Heck, I am “buying” it out myself and I will update everyone on how it goes.

What this essentially is is a free trial offer of his magazine with a whole lot of big bonuses. I do this during my testing of products, too. The whole goal with this marketing strategy is to give someone the opportunity to trial a product and if they like it, do nothing and you will stay a subscriber (and be charged for it). It is the responsibility of the consumer to cancel if they do not wish to continue. I know with my offers, I make this very clear and this offer seems to be just as clear, too. I know there are plenty of other offers online that put this subscription in the fine-print and I do not recommend these products. In this case, Mike spells it out in the open and I have no problem with that. cheers…matt

  3. I am sorry but I have seriously decided that Mike Filsaime is crap.

I will never trust anyone that tries to give something away for free and then in the fine print it is a membership deal.

Seriously where have ethics gone to? Ethics command trust. If he wants to have a membership site then he should be honest enough to say it up front.

Yes it is a trick and yes it is unethical.

I have been caught twice by this. As soon as it happens I organize a refund and I immediately unsubscribe from their list. They are no longer worth listening to.

We are only individuals and if we don’t trust someone then we should automatically unsubscribe from them. It is the ‘Power of one’!

Sorry but not interested in ‘Murky Mike’. The waters are way too Murky.

  4. I agree with PlanetDenise. Mike might be a nice guy but the offer is crap. Sop playing games with people! Who is Mike Filsaime to assume his time is more valuable than mine? There is no way in hell I would ever go for a deal like this. Why not just sell the “Secret” for a modest cost and leave it at that?

I’ll find a copy for a few bucks on Ebay or Craig’s list.

Mike - you hit a new low!

    Nick.

  5. I believe that Mike Filsaime’s The 7 Figure Secrets is great help to create successful internet marketing business.

  6. Wow looks like there are some haters making comments on here. If you don’t like his product or all the free content just DON’T subscribe nobody is putting a gun to your head and making you subscribe so stop crying about it!! Mike has given out so much great and free content over the years and here he is asking people to actually pay a little fee to get his information. My goodness he is a crook he should be hanged for being so ridiculous as to expect people to pay for information that could make them thousands of dollars. Everyone wants something for nothing and even when they get free info they rarely do anything about it.

Hey matt i appreciate all the free info you give out all the time and i appreciate recommending good products. keep up the good work

  7. I will comment on this on today’s (6/9/08) blog…

  8. [...] The 7 Figure Hype - Again! [...]

  9. Actually Mike Filsaime is a scam artist and a thief. It is NOT easy at all to unsubscribe from his monthly payments that you are scammed into if you don’t read the fine print. And he is teaching people to do this? That is a shame!

  10. Mike is a very aggressive internet marketer and his methods that he teaches and applies in his own campaigns can be very powerful (I have used them myself).

If you are referring to the 7 Figure Secrets offer and cancellation, I don’t quite know why you had difficulty, since I went through the process with no resistance at all. (yes, there may have been a few upsells and downsells, but at the end it was a simple cancellation).
