Changing the Font & Style of Your H1 Tags

QUESTION: (Rhonda) I am having problems changing the font size of my H1text. Is this very important? If so, how do I go about changing it?

Changing the text and/or style of an H1 tag is simple in CSS.  It does not affect anything other than how the visitor sees it though (i.e., if you use a large font, it means nothing more than a smaller font, in SEO terms or how Google sees it).

You can change the H1 tag locally or in the CSS definition file.

If you want to change all of the H1 tag settings in your entire website, you would do this in the CSS file:

h1 {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would use the h1 tag as you normally would:
<h1>This is my H1 tag</h1>

You can define a class in the CSS file which allows you to define your new style whenever you wish anywhere on the site:

.h1style {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would add this class to your h1 tag, when you wish it:

<h1 class=”h1style”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

* Remember to add the “.” when defining it in the CSS to classify it as a class.

Finally, you can do it locally using a style attribute (without the CSS file):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px;”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

All of the above do the exact same thing.  Their use is based on how often you use the style and how you want it defined (whether globally or locally).

Also, remember you can add other styles to the same definition (like color):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px; color:red;”>This is my H1 Tag that is Red and 24px high</h1>

I find that being able to change the styles of my text for header and other standard tags to be quite invaluable!  Knowing a little bit of CSS can go a long way.  Give this a try!

The easiest thing to try first is the local definition using the style attribute. If this is working for you, consider creating or editing your own CSS file!

Good luck!  cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew Bredel begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlightingMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

Yes, I know that this would not classify this as my most SEO friendly title or topic for that matter. And frankly, some days I just don’t want to do that (it takes too much effort to think that hard!). Is there any SEO strategy in NOT being SEO? Probably! But unless I am hoping to rank for terms like “holy smoke”, today’s blog is for my mental health (and your entertainment only!).

If you missed the last post about Google Adwords Quality Score, check be sure to check that one out since it is pretty popular and packed with a lot of great and informative Adwords and PPC content.

(Hey wait a minute! I just did some SEO in putting that keyword rich hypertext back to my blog post…You can never escape the wrath and writing SEO once you start).

Continuing with the babble…Yesterday was the StomperNet relaunch and I was very excited to give props to it (since it is a major component on how I got here). I am sure many of you received a handful of information from me in your email yesterday and throughout the week.

Things change so fast with Stompernet, though, and at about 5 minutes before the launch, I realized that my links were directed to Stompernet.com instead of Stompernet.net. I don’t think I ever typed faster in my life! For those of you I mislead, I am deeply sorry! Who would have thought they would be different anyways? Still, I think I lost a good clump of hair with that one.

Further, it was a big week of doing videos and creating content. I love doing this stuff, but it can really take a lot out of you! On the side, I am “secretly” redesigning the backend of NetWebVideo and it is going to be KILLER!

I suppose this is one of those “pumped up” weeks for me where the ideas were flowing and the energy was high!  (And it has actually been raining here in San Diego…so sitting back, doing work, and zoning out to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon has been rather inspirational…and not in the LSD way, either!).

And have you been following my “Twittering”? (you can see the latest on the right side of this blog).  I’m having a good time with my updates, so if you are the least bit interested in what I do on a day-to-day basis, be sure to follow me on your own twitter account.  I’ll talk more about Twitter in another blog and another day.

So I think I am ending early for the day!  I plan to stay at home for the Memorial Day week.  Hopefully I can get a babysitter for a few hours so my wife and I can go and see the new Indiana Jones movie.  But I look forward to the peace and quiet.

For you new Stompers, don’t get overwhelmed and definitely don’t try to take it all in at once.  This weekend is a great time to start, but then again, be sure to enjoy yourself a little bit (for sanity’s sake!)

Finally, I hope everyone has a safe, relaxing and fun Memorial Day weekend!  cheers…matt
