I received a letter a couple of weeks ago concerning the renewal of a domain that was about to expire (that I currently own). The pitch: They will renew it for me, give me some search engine submissions and reports and charge me $35/year for this service. Huh? You got to be kidding! If I want to renew it, I will just pay the $10 that GoDaddy original sells it for. As for the search engine submissions, I feel this is a rather fruitless cause. No major search engine provides priority to these submissions and the tools they offer can be found for free at places like Google Webmaster Tools. If I am really wanting to keep this domain from expiring, I will respond to one of the daily reminders I receive from GoDaddy (and pay my reasonable $10).

My name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer.
For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

Oh my, how could you pass up that bargain?
Yes, or you could pay eight & change with Namecheap (there’s always a discount code floating around to save 20% off their regular pricing)
I guess that company certainly didn’t do their homework to see what their target audience’s (aka you) gullibility level was.

I get these all the time. I mean, all the time. Drives me a-bananas. And you’re right, search engine submission is a farce. Totally unnecessary.
Talk to ya soon.
