Do Link Exchanges Still Work?

QUESTION: (Gerald) I have a number of people asking me to exchange links. I have read that this is good, but can’t find anywhere how to do it. Any suggestions, or is there an article you have that would help me. Appreciate it.

Good question, Gerald, because we really don’t hear as much about link exchanges as we did in the past.  I think the big reason for it is it’s effectiveness (or lack thereof).  Search engine spiders are much smarter than they were 2 or 3 years agos.  And most will recognize a “link exchange” rather easily.

For those who don’t know what a link exchange is, it is when you approach another website (usually with similar content to yours) and ask them to place a nice, keyword-rich anchor text link back to your website.  In exchange, you will do the same for them.  Remember that an important part of SEO is backlinks (i.e., receiving links from other websites pointing back to you).  A few years ago, a lot of this “linking power” was represented by a Page Rank.  Getting high Page Rank websites to point back to you effectively will increase your own page rank.

Personally, I think Page Rank is a bit of a farce these days (at least the public one).  I do think the major search engines (like Google) have there own ranking system based on popularity, but it would not be public.  Still, getting links from “authority sites” with relevance (to your niche) is always key.

Now getting back to the question…I think link exchanges (or “reciprocal linking”) is really not going to help or hurt you.  Any backlink (in most cases) usually will help you.  But if there is a reciprocal link, the spiders will usually recognize this and probably not give you proper popularity for it.

Again, like everything SEO, this is speculation, but I know there has been a lot of abuse of link exchanges over the years (like link farms, paid text links, etc.) to draw a lot of attention to it.  I used to do it quite a bit.  I don’t really do it any more (unless I am quite friendly with the website and we exchange primarily for the traffic, not the SEO).  I think your efforts would be better suited to article writing/submission, press releases, even directory submissions.

You can also consider n-way link exchanges.  For a 3-way link exchange example: Site A links to Site B, Site B links to Site C, and Site C links to Site A.  You can do this rather deeply, too.  But still, the search engine spiders are smart and may start recognizing the linking footprints.  The larger the “n”, the better off you are…but of course, this is a hell of a lot more work and requires some skillful coordination.

Personally, I have become somewhat of an a-hole about link exchange requests.  I don’t get as many as I used to, but when I do I usually ignore them.

cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew BredelMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

Exposing the FTC Regulations on Endorsements and Testimonials

Over the past month, I have felt a lot of rumblings throughout the internet due to the lasted FTC rulings on Testimonials and Endorsements. This IS going to change the way we market online, but who really understands this? Here, I sit down with expert internet law attorney Linda Goodman (from TheGoodmanLawFirm.com) to help me understand the fate of my own websites and its affect on this internet marketing world.

Htaccess & Other URL Redirect Methods

The Product Launch Formula 3.0 will be released TOMORROW at 2pm EST, and with it major hype (And Major Bonuses!). Here’s your chance to see what I have to offer, plus a few bonus links to get you early-bird access to launch!

I need to tell you a few things right now before you make any critical decisions about whether or not to purchase the Product Launch Formula 3.0 tomorrow (because this COULD change the rest of your life…that happened to me back in 2006!):

1)  I can get you on the “Early Bird List!”  PLF 3.0 is meant to launch tomorrow at 2pm EST.  If you get your name on the following list, you will receive an exclusive sales page link tomorrow from Jeff Walker so you can buy early at 1pm EST.

Get on the Early Bird List Here:

http://gofollow.me/plf3early

(Look below video to sign-up on the Early Bird list)

Why does that matter?  First, he usually offers some insane added bonuses for the first people to join.  This is well worth your time to be in early.

Also, the Product Launch Formula has been known to sell out rather quickly in the past (and he usually only sells this one time per year, if that).  Better to be safe than sorry.

2)  Still on the fence about PLF and want to know more about the product, Jeff released yesterday his “Fireside Chat” video answering those common questions that most people have:

“Do I need a list?”, “How fast can I build a list?”, etc.

A great video for those of you just getting into the business!

Check it out here:

3) Most importantly, you are going to be bombarded with emails (like mine) offering bonuses and incentives.  This is just part of the “game”.
Jeff commands a lot of respect in the internet marketing community and every major online marketer will be promoting this.

Plus, our “commission” to get you to join is rather high.

I’m looking at this as not only a purchase for the PLF, but a purchase from me, directly.  And unlike many of these other marketers, I plan on fulfilling my bonus promises and maximizing the value.

My bonus is simple…First, I’ll send you my home study course (I usually don’t sell this, but when I do, it retails for between $497 and $997).  That includes 6 DVDs, a 450 page TruGuru guide, the E.L.M.O. guide (and I usually throw in a TruGuru T-Shirt for good luck!).

And whether you return PLF for a full refund (which he always guarantees), I will ship this out to you the first week and you keep it no matter what.

But my BETTER bonus is my time.  I have never done this before…

You will  get direct access to me and my tools (including my propriety affiliate and membership site portals to use for yourself).  I’m your technical and marketing guru now.

I can help you set up your squeeze pages, your merchanting, your shopping cart, your content, your analytics…this is what I am good at.  There will be no excuse that you cannot execute what Jeff teaches you…because I have done it all before.

I am doing this only for the first 5 people who sign up, though.
(It is a lot of work and commitment for me to do it!).

I know a lot of other marketers will promise “consulting” time, but that will usually be a 1 hour conversation on the phone…trust me, I have bought from some of them before…this is so much more!

Once you purchase PLF through the link:

Be sure to send me your receipt and mailing address to:

justaskmatt [at ] matthewbredel [dot ] com

And if you have any questions even BEFORE you purchase or how I may help, email me at that address, too.

***
OK, I think that is enough for today.

I know a lot of you are reading all of this with a knot in your stomach.

“Should I do it?”
“It’s a Big Investment”
“Is This is Scam?”
“Will I be Able to Do It?”

I’ve been there before and I have felt this.  It IS a tough decision and a bit of a financial & time commitment.  I took the leap many years ago and it paid off.

If you have any further questions, email me at:

justaskmatt [at ] matthewbredel [dot ] com

(If you leave a phone number, I’ll even try to call you back before the launch!)

But right now, no matter if you have decided to buy yet or not, be sure to get your name on the Early Bird
list:

cheers…matt

P.S.  This “Early Bird” page will also show you the sales video that he plans to put up tomorrow!  This will give you all of the details about offer what he has in store for tomorrow…
