Changing the Font & Style of Your H1 Tags

QUESTION: (Rhonda) I am having problems changing the font size of my H1text. Is this very important? If so, how do I go about changing it?

Changing the text and/or style of an H1 tag is simple in CSS.  It does not affect anything other than how the visitor sees it though (i.e., if you use a large font, it means nothing more than a smaller font, in SEO terms or how Google sees it).

You can change the H1 tag locally or in the CSS definition file.

If you want to change all of the H1 tag settings in your entire website, you would do this in the CSS file:

h1 {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would use the h1 tag as you normally would:
<h1>This is my H1 tag</h1>

You can define a class in the CSS file which allows you to define your new style whenever you wish anywhere on the site:

.h1style {
font-size: 24px;
}

You would add this class to your h1 tag, when you wish it:

<h1 class=”h1style”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

* Remember to add the “.” when defining it in the CSS to classify it as a class.

Finally, you can do it locally using a style attribute (without the CSS file):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px;”>This is my H1 Tag</h1>

All of the above do the exact same thing.  Their use is based on how often you use the style and how you want it defined (whether globally or locally).

Also, remember you can add other styles to the same definition (like color):

<h1 style=”font-size:24px; color:red;”>This is my H1 Tag that is Red and 24px high</h1>

I find that being able to change the styles of my text for header and other standard tags to be quite invaluable!  Knowing a little bit of CSS can go a long way.  Give this a try!

The easiest thing to try first is the local definition using the style attribute. If this is working for you, consider creating or editing your own CSS file!

Good luck!  cheers…matt

Who is Behind Marketing Mind?

Matthew Bredel begin_of_the_skype_highlighting     end_of_the_skype_highlightingMy name is Matthew Bredel and as of March, 2007, I am a full-time, work-at-home internet marketer. For close to 10 years, I worked for a defense company which was an OK job, but I was so uninspired in life and frankly, I needed some more money. That is when I first discovered internet marketing! Now I admit that I didn't start making thousands in my first couple of months (in fact, I lost my shirt!), but I finally saw the "internet light"...

What can I say, I’m slacking off! But who can blame me! It’s been a few days in Australia already and thoughts of internet marketing are about 10,000km away. Does it really take a 14 hour plane ride to escape the internet? (probably not!)

Some bloggers argue that every post you write needs to have a purpose and should be “optimized” to bring in more followers, more traffic (and ultimately, more money).

Today’s blog post has no point.  There is nothing about this post that is optimized or serves a technical purpose (other than letting people know what is on my mind).  That is the point of a blog…don’t forget it!

The other reason why this post has no point is because I find myself in the northern beach suburb of Sydney called Dee Why and frankly, I really don’t want to think about the internet.  I am in a little convenient store in the corner right now crammed between a back-packer and the store owner paying a whopping AU$2 for an hour’s worth of internet (let me tell you, this is the best bargain in town!).

When I planned this 4-week trip way back in February, I had the intention of “bring my business with me”.  This was a part of my original dream, too.  Now that I am here, though, I find the summer air, the crashing waves and the sausage rolls way too enticing to spend my time doing (gulp) work.

So I am a slacker!

Fear not, though…I have a few long drives ahead of me and a laptop to get caught up.  Once I stabilize a better internet connection for my laptop, I am sure the draw of the internet and the passion for my business will return, but for today, I have breakfast at the beach, lunch with an old friend, prawn barbie a couple of suburbs away and a visit from an old Redfern Broadband Systems workmate.  I think we will do a few schooners of Tooneys down at the local RSL.

Screw work, I’m having fun!

cheers…matt

P.S.  I do have a few good posts coming up…when I get to it!

  1. Hi Matthew,

    I’m in Bondi Beach myself. I’m Irish but doing a bit of traveling. I know what you mean, it is very hard to get around to work when you have the sun, sea and sand and your doorstep. I get about 2 hours internet marketing in max per day, all the rest of time I’m surfing and living the good life.

    I was in the RSL in Dee Why a few weeks ago to watch a match. It’s massive. I’ve never seen anything like it.

    You’ll have to go surfing at Manly now that you’re here. Great waves there.

    Have a great trip,

    Fergal
